PORTI E STAZIONI: innovative Programme for urban ports and stations - IT

Introduction
Porti e Stazioni is an innovative Programme for urban areas. The main objective is the regeneration of the urban areas adjacent to railways station and ports, in order to provide them with services and infrastructure facilities.
Description
The main purpose of the Porti e Stazioni Programme is to fill the gap of national infrastructural networks, especially in the Mezzogiorno area, whose main features are:
  • the presence of road transport with an external negative effect on the environment and security
  • the lack of homogeneity of services
  • inadequate railway networks
  • few connections within the networks with a low level of accessibility to the inland areas and to coasts
  • the inadequate connections of many airports, ports, stations and freight centres to the national networks
  • the inadequate railway connections for passengers between metropolitan areas and the main trans-European networks
  • the low quality of services
  • the lack of intermodal transport.
Porti e Stazioni Programme is an innovative Programme for urban areas close to railways stations and/or large ports with a history of economic and environmental decline, social exclusion and residential building stock in high need of upgrading. The innovative aspects are represented by the models, procedures and methods employed for stimulating and triggering change in urban environments. The starting point was the belief that railway stations and ports can potentially become new urban and territorial nodes able to create high quality development through fully exploiting the opportunities offered by the interchange and the exchange of all types of services among networks. The main objectives of this Programme are:
  • to fight the urban and social blight of the areas close to ports and stations
  • to identify and upgrade the values of these areas
  • to launch innovative and experimental practices of management changing processes in the urban field
  • to share new partnership models between public and private actors in the economic-financial management of the urban regeneration processes.
