Enhancing the territorial node Florence-Pisa through the regeneration of the river Arno surrounding area– Florence, IT.

Introduction
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme aims at enhancing the territorial features of the river basin between the towns of Florence and Pisa. The programme strengthens partnership among towns surrounding the Arno river and promotes the regeneration of the river basin area as well as the navigablity of the river.
Description
The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme detects effective strategies to regenerate the river Arno basin area surrounding the towns of Florence and Pisa. The Programme lists three levels of action: a “System action”, a “Context action” and a “Local action”. The “System action” and the “Context action” aim at drafting a feasibility study to explore the strategies to be implemented in order to regenerate the Arno river area and investigate the territorial effects of the planned interventions in terms of touristic, cultural and environmental impacts. In addition, the “Local action” aims to create an other feasibility study concerning the implementation of a new urban area in a suburb called Le Piagge.

Objectives
The main objective of the S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme is to create a network of cities in order to promote, with the support of tecnical researches and territorial studies, the enhancement and renewal of the Arno river area. The main instruments to promote an integrated strategy of the planned interventions are two feasibility studies concerning the regeneration measures to renew the Programme’s target areas. The feasibility studies promoted by the S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme define the sustainability of the planned interventions and the environmental impacts of the regeneration projects. Moreover, these studies analyse how to promote sustainable tourism, intelligent and efficent transport systems and sustainable strategies to renew and regenerate the area of Le Piagge.
Products
The main products of the S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme network are structural and infrastructural interventions to promote the regeneration of the Arno river basin and of Le Piagge neighbour. The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme has promoted the following actions:
  • the feasibility study for the enhancement of the relationship between the towns of Florence and Pisa
  • the strengthening of the infrastructural connections between the two towns and the surrounding areas
  • the regeneration and promotion of the economic features of the Arno basin area
  • the regeneration of Le Piagge suburb, through infrastructural interventions and the promotion of services for tourists and inhabitants.
EU involvement
The key objective of the network implemented through the S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme is to devise and implement strategic integrated initiatives to promote the territorial enhancement of areas where primary infrastructural systems are located. Moreover, the Programme target areas are tightly related to the European TEN Networks. The S.I.S.Te.M.A. Florence Programme promotes a poly-centric development model and strengthens the ties between regional infrastructure, European and national urban systems and the Florence region secondary networks.
