Magazine research unveils the most liveable cities in the world
30-07-2008

The liveability of cities is an important issue nowadays. Urban professionals around the world all break their heads over the question of how to make their city a nice place to be - preferably even the best place to be. Many rankings exist to show which cities perform well in the field of finance, sustainability or innovation. Monocle Magazine however went one step further. The London-based media brand undertook a three-month research to discover which cities in the world are most liveable. In their search for liveability they considered both scientific as well as subjective elements. The liveability of cities was measured along a wide range of metrics, such as international connections, safety and health care, but also hours of sunshine, nightlife and the amount of green space. The final ranking consists of 25 cities, with Copenhagen at the top of the list.
Monocle Magazine assessed the liveability of cities around the world based on:
  1. international connections
  2. murder rates and domestic burglaries
  3. state education & health care
  4. sunshine & average temperature
  5. communications
  6. connectivity
  7. tolerance
  8. being able to get a drink after 01:00
  9. cost/quality of public transport and taxis
  10. strenght of local media
  11. availability of international print media
  12. access to nature
  13. amount of green space
  14. environmental initiatives
