Fund for the renovation of the Old Town of Luxembourg – Annual Interim Reports (Fonds de rénovation de la Vieille Ville – Rapports d’activité et comptes annuels 2004, 2005, 2006)

Introduction
In 1993 the Luxembourg government created a fund for the renovation of 4 blocks in the Old Town of the city of Luxembourg by means of restoration, transformation, construction or adaptation of the relevant buildings and their surroundings .
Description
The fund is a public institution created by the Luxembourg government in 1993, under the supervision of the Minister for Public Works who reports to the Chamber of Deputies. The Funds’ expenditures are controlled by the Court of Audit.
The Funds’ goal is to renovate 4 blocks of the old town in the city of Luxembourg by restoration, transformation, construction or adaptation of the relevant buildings and their surroundings. The blocks include public buildings like the ancient clinic St. Joseph, the national museum, the privy council as well as the juridical infrastructure.
Before the restoration begins, a basic inquiry is attempted by historians, archaeologists, sociologists and architects. Restoration cannot begin until they are heard and the safety of the cultural heritage is guaranteed. Based on this inquiry architects start to develop restoration plans that reflect the concept of a sustainable restoration.
Finally, all decisions are made by the Minister for Public Works in coordination with the Minister for Culture who is in charge of history, archaeology and design.
