Amsterdam Science Park - the Netherlands

Introduction
Amsterdam Science Park is an extensive site close to the centre of Amsterdam. In the coming ten years, the Science Park will be further developed to form the largest high-tech knowledge centre in Europe.
Problem
How can one develop an international knowledge centre where cooperation between university education, research and knowledge-intensive activity are strongly stimulated?
Description
Amsterdam Science Park is the place of business for part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Informatics (FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam, several large national research institutes and approx. 80 high-tech companies. The Amsterdam Science Park is still being developed and will be expanded to 500,000 square metres to accommodate offices, laboratories and teaching establishments, a hotel, congress facilities, sport facilities, student accommodation and apartments for visiting researchers, child day care and an NS railway station in the vicinity. Moreover, in a few years the whole FNWI will be housed in a yet to be built new faculty building.
In 2010, Amsterdam Science Park must be one of the leading science parks in Europe. An objective that can be realised using an infrastructure of world-class, top-notch computer and network services. For this, Amsterdam Science Park has the Amsterdam Internet Exchange (AMS-IX), one of the most powerful internet hubs in the world.
Approach
The area stimulates inspiring cooperation and knowledge exchange: ‘a world of science in a city of inspiration’. A place where high-quality education, research and entrepreneurship come together with knowledge, talent and ideas. In the coming years, more than 300,000 square metres will be developed. A large part of this is meant for the new development of offices and other working accommodation.
An essential part of this vision is that education, research and entrepreneurship are strongly linked with each other and that they regularly meet each other in an inspiring environment. The vision assumes a step-by-step development of the Science Park over a period of no less than ten years. This makes it possible to flexibly respond during the coming ten years to changing circumstances and social developments.
