Pearls of integration 2005

Introduction
This publication contains up-to-date overviews and advice for city administrators and policy officials wanting to set up or improve integration projects within their city. What are the criteria that will improve a project's chances of success?
Description
The core of the publication consists of eight so-called ‘pearls among integration’ projects in actual practice: inspirational projects that have already demonstrated their success and are a source for practical tips. Finally, practical guidelines provide tips for cultivating a successful integration project, a pearl.
Conclusions
  • It important that attention be paid to all those involved in the project. The eight pearls demonstrate that the key to success lies in the participation and efforts of everyone with a part to play in the setting up, implementation and result of the project.
  • A broad view of finances helps the success of a project. The pearls show us that inventiveness and guts helped get subsidies.
  • A characteristic aspect repeated in each pearl is that there is evidence of clear political and social support. The idea has to be approved and taken up by the right people.
  • In an integration project it is seldom possible to steer by results alone. There will always be some degree of unpredictability.  It is important that this unpredictability be limited by restricting risks at the start of the project.
