Cultural diversity in European cities

Introduction
Today most people live in cities and larger urban areas - at the global level 50% and at the EU level 80%. In other words, today cities constitute a mix of people, cultural and social life and different important societal functions such as trade, investments, education, knowledge.
Description
Cities constitute a mix of people, cultural and social life and different important societal functions such as trade, investments, education, knowledge. Consequently, cities are the primary 'destinations of globalisation' and it is especially in the cities that demand and supply with respect to know-how, investments, labour, cross- and intercultural communications, etc. have increased - across national borders. This explains why the majority of people of foreign origin and ethnic minorities - like the rest of the population - live in cities and larger urban areas.
Conclusions
The booklet identifies specific opportunities, challenges and barriers to cultural diversity in European cities and on this basis presents the state of the art. The focus is especially on the consequences of urban segregation, access to the labour market, social urban life, etc. and the importance of citizen participation and inclusion of the civil society.
