Rotterdam: Public transport junction point has become safe and easily accessible

Introduction
At Station Noord, different types of public transport converge (bus, tram and train). With the project ‘public transport junction point Station Noord’ logical cross-over points have been created, so that he station has become well-organised and handy.
Problem
The aim of the project was to turn Station Noord and the surrounding area into an attractive, easily manageable and socially safe transport junction point. The objective was divided into three concrete plans:
  • creating a good through-flow and accessibility;
  • improving public safety;
  • making the area easy to manage.
Description
The three types of public transport, train, bus and tram, have been situated as close together as possible. It has therefore become easier to change from one type to another. The design of the whole area included in the plan has been such that people can now feel safe in the area. The facilities have also been extended, with taxi stands, bicycle stalls (65) and lockers (20) and parking places (10).
Approach
The spearheads within the Rotterdam programme document are:
  • Integrated approach of youth problems (family, education, leisure time, work).
  • Investments in culture and economy; the Cultural world district.
  • Complete improvement of the quality of the outdoors area in the territory.
  • Economisal-recreative (re-)development of the Rotte and its surroundings.
  • Participation of inhabitants and entrepreneurs with the driving Thea terras.
Results
The layout of the station has become safer. There are very few hidden corners and the station is well-lit. The police has included the station in its daily foot patrol and in its 24-hour car patrol. Measures have also been taken to ensure that the station will continue to look attractive with the least amount of effort. There are very few places where posters or graffiti can be applied. The green spaces are conveniently arranged and have few objects, with the result that the station not only looks orderly, but only light maintenance work is required.
EU involvement
URBAN II is an initiative of the European Commission. The aim is to support innovative projects in the field of urban regeneration in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The URBAN II projects will set an example for national urban policy. In the Netherlands, areas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Heerlen have been allocated for the period 2000-2006. In Rotterdam URBAN II attention is directed at three neighbourhoods in 'Noord aan de Rotte', with a total of almost 30,000 inhabitants.
