Safe enterprise hallmark in The Hague city centre

Introduction
The Hague city centre received the Safe Enterprise Hallmark (KVO) early in November 2004. Entrepreneurs, the police and the municipality now carry out the agreed action items together.
Problem
How can The Hague tackle safety in the shopping area systematically and bring it to a higher level?
Description
The KVO is a method for working on safety in an area that is full of activity. The entire city centre of The Hague has held this hallmark since November 2004. This means that entrepreneurs, the police and the municipality are working together towards an attractive, safe and clean city centre. They have concluded agreements in respect of this. The KVO's strength lies in the broad and simultaneous approach on many fronts. All these combined measures ensure increased safety and feeling of safety in the shopping area.
Approach
The KVO is not a one-off campaign, but a continuous plan of action. In order to retain the hallmark for the centre of the city, the Haagland police force and the municipality have drawn up a joint plan of action. In consultation with entrepreneurs, the municipality is to take care of better lighting, for example along the pedestrian route from Turfmarkt to Spui. Entrepreneurs are also to conclude contracts with refuse collectors to ensure that refuse collection is more efficient. Shop security will improve through collaboration between shop security services and a more intensive collaboration between private security firms and the police. Alongside the regular controls, the fire brigade will advise entrepreneurs with respect to fire safety.
Results
The aim is to have reduced both crime and nuisance by 25 percent in 2006 and to have increased the residents’ feeling of security.
