CECODHAS Observatory Colloquium Conference: Urban Change in Europe: The Place of Social Housing in Integrated Policies - London, 1 December 2008
01-12-2008
Introduction
This colloquium is the third in a series addressing the future challenges of social housing across the EU. The event will discuss a number of crucial issues relating to the role of social housing in integrated urban policiesleading to sustainable communities. It will specifically address the links between social housing and deprived neighbourhoods, urban restructuring trends and urban governance.
Description
The conference gives one the unique opportunity to hear leading European scholars highlight the merits of current approaches to social housing, community trends and urban regeneration. Residential segregation by income and/or tenure is becoming stronger, leading to areas of concentrated vulnerable groups in some countries. Amongst the variety of negative effects of this situation are stigmatisation of poor neighbourhoods, reduction in the quality of service provisions, and overall negative cycles of urban and social decline. Social housing can often be seen as part of the problem in deteriorating neighbourhoods. It is necessary to address their role within urban regeneration to assess their full potential for becoming part of the solution. This conference will highlight issues affecting the sector throughout Europe, and how we can be involved in improving areas in need of regeneration, without sacrificing the quality of housing or communities where people live. Don’t miss this proactive and informed update on how housing associations should respond to the trends re-shaping social housing, and the latest demands for neighbourhoods and communities.
