Study on Portugal’s urban system. Covering metropolitan regions, it is a starting-point for reflection and discussion of Portugal’s urban system.The origins of this study lie in the acknowledged role which the urban system plays in urban planning and in balanced territorial development, and in the need to increase our knowledge of the country as it is.This is a set of studies on the national urban system - covering medium-sized towns, the metropolitan regions and the so-called complementary network - which is drawing to a close with the publication of this summary document.This study is part of the set of studies making up the "Projecto Marco: Estudo Prospectivo do Sistema Urbano do Sudoeste Europeu" (Project Marco: A Forecasting Study of the Urban Systems of Southwest Europe), carried out under the Interreg IIC: Southwest Europe Programme.

In recognition of the vital organizing role which the urban system performs in spatial planning and well-balanced territorial development, and of the need to improve our knowledge of our own country.

The study provides an overall view of the Portuguese urban system which it is hoped will be useful in strategic terms for assessing future trends.
