Valuable data available in new Eurostat regional statistiscal yearbook
14-11-2006

The 2006 edition of "Regions: Statistical yearbook" is now available online at Eurostat. The yearbook covers the 254 regions of the 25 EU Member States, defined by level 2 of the Nomenclature of territorial units for statistics (NUTS 2003), and the 14 statistical regions in the candidate countries Bulgaria and Romania. It contains chapters on population, GDP, household accounts, labour market, labour productivity, urban statistics, science, technology and innovation, business, health, transport and agriculture. New this year is the chapter on labour productivity.
The Urban Audit chapter concentrates on the competitiveness of cities, analysing various facets of benchmarking cities that compete against each other. Cities are well positioned to benefit from the current economic changes and become more significant economic actors. Consequently, the concept of competitiveness is extended and analysed at city level. Several of the 270 Urban Audit indicators have been related to urban competitiveness.
The indicators described in the yearbook were chosen, on the one hand, to show important inputs for urban competitiveness (labour supply, human capital, business structure, etc.), outputs (gross domestic product), and outcomes (income, etc) and, on the other hand, to demonstrate the various aspects of the Urban Audit data set, such as the range of spatial units applied or the different data sources used.
