Protection and rehabilitation of the Historical City and integration with the environment - Santiago de Compostela, ES

Introduction
The restoration of the Historical City of Santiago de Compostela intends to improve the living conditions in a place that receives millions of tourists every year.
Problem
Since the early nineties Santiago de Compostela has been facing the challenge of the urban restoration and environmental regeneration of its historical World Heritage City.
Description
The urban restoration in Santiago de Compostela pays special attention to two crucial problems in historical cities: the preservation of the residential usage with the improvement of the housing conditions and the environmental regeneration of open spaces that have survived in a marginal state.
This activity is developed in a pilgrimage city, destination of millions of travellers who enjoy not only its cultural heritage but the experience of immersion in a historical city with all its attributes, including the most fragile and valuable ones: the inhabitants that continue to use it and the natural setting in which it has developed.
Results
More than 650 projects with public support have promoted a generalised rehabilitation process with demanding environmental and heritage criteria, which in turn has induced more than 400 private projects. A stable trend that bodes well for the objective of integral rehabilitation.
The policy of restoration of free spaces (over 18Ha of new parks) has consolidated two green corridors that include public riverbeds, woodland and vegetation, historical gardens and ethnographic elements.
