District remodelling programme in the Barcelonès region: Remodelling of the Via Trajana district - Sant Adrià del Besòs and Barcelona, ES

Introduction
The project intends to remodel the whole district of Via Trajana, integrating it in its surroundings.
Problem
The district of Via Trajana was created in 1953 to remove the shanty towns of Barcelona due to the Eucharistic Congress being held in the city. The construction process was therefore hasty and careless.
In 1990, structural problems were detected on the structures, which suffered a severe state of “aluminosis” and “carbonatation”. The physical and social degradation of the district was also alarming.
Description
The main purpose of the remodelling of the Via Trajana district is to provide decent housing for all the families currently living in dwellings affected by the structural pathology of aluminosis and to recover the district and integrate it in the city, as well as giving it a decent commercial activity and creating free spaces for community development. To ensure inclusion, the programme includes actions for labour integration and social assistance for disabled groups...
Results
The main achievements of the program are:
  • Housings severely affected by aluminosis have been rebuilt. 656 families have been re-accommodated in 546 new social housings.
  • The district is better integrated physically and socially with its surroundings, being no longer a focus of marginality.
  • In parallel, social plans to support re-accommodation have been developed, helping to achieve social integration in the new surroundings.
