European award for Water In Historic City Centres 03-12-2007 The project Water In Historic City Centres (WIHCC) has won the European
Regional Cultural Champion Award. The prize was awarded to the WIHCC-project
because, according to the European jury, the six partnercities succeeded best in
promoting their region’s cultural heritage to a wide audience. The European
Regional Cultural Champion Award was presented to mr. A. Rombouts, mayor of the
Dutch city of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, during a ceremony in Brussels yesterday. Mr.
Rombouts received the award on behalf of the six WIHCC partnercities: Breda and
‘s-Hertogenbosch in the Netherlands, Ghent and Mechelen in Belgium, Chester in
the UK and Limerick in Ireland.
The European Regional Champion Awards were awarded for the first time by the
Committee of Regions to showcase and celebrate the very best in regional
innovation and best practice throughout EU regions, highlighting champion
programmes and projects that can serve as examples to other regions.
The awards were open to any region, city or town in Europe to champion one stand out project or initiative per category. The nominations could be made via the individual authority, the regional offices based in Brussels or the European and national associations of local and regional authorities. In their assessment, the judges were looking for evidence of sound policy
development, clear evidence of successful delivery (statistics/results/value for
money/actual benefits to citizens etc.), elements of efficiency (was the entry
delivered on or before deadline and on or under budget), best practise (showing
how the entry could not have been achieved any better), innovation (coming up
with new solutions to solve old problems) and environmental factors.
