 | Ten European cities sign up to environmental campaign 04-02-2008 After leaders from ten European cities launched a covenant to address climate
protection, mayors from other cites are asked to join them. This initiative
encourages European cities and towns to act in the field of climate protection,
and is an important step in recognising the importance of community action to
achieve a sustainable energy future and reduce the human impact on climate
change. The initial signatories of the Covenant include the cities of Berlin,
Bonn, Heidelberg, Helsinki, London, Milan, Nantes and Riga.
Deputy Mayor of London, Nicky Gavron said: “Tackling climate change is an
overriding imperative – the battle against climate change will be won or lost in
cities”, and stressed the value of international networking such as the C40 (a
group linking 40 of the largest cities in the world that are committed to
climate protection) and ICLEI’s “superb” Cities for Climate Protection Campaign.
Letizia Moratti, Mayor of Milan, shared highlights in the city’s climate
change defense plan and the newly introduced pollution charge. Deputy Mayor of
Riga, Almers Ludviks, focused on improvements in district heating and the need
to raise awareness among citizens on opportunities for action. The involvement
of cities from the North to the south, from Eastern to Western Europe is an
encouraging development.
Katrin Lompscher, Berlin Senator for Health and Environmental Protection
stressed the value of partnerships with a variety of local stakeholders, such as
housing and hospital associations, city sanitation and energy service providers.
