The 25 dirtiest cities in the world
18-03-2008

Many cities will be happy to be on 'top 25' lists, but in this case, reactions might be less cheerful. On the basis of the 2007 Health and Sanitation Rankings published by Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Forbes magazine identified the top 25 of the world's dirties cities. Number 1 on the list is Azerbaijan's capital city Baku, which suffers from dirty water, oil ponds and life-threatening levels of air pollution.
Other high positions on the list are Dhaka (Bangladash), Antananarivo (Madagascar), Port au Prince (Haiti) and Mexico City (Mexico). The most important problems these cities face have to deal with air pollution, growing need for efficient water and waste management, and rising health care costs because of high pollution levels.
According to Richard Fuller, founder of the Blacksmith Institute in New York, cleaning up these dirty cities does not cost that much. He claims that 'for relatively little, we can do an awful lot to save a whole lot of lives.'
