Maltese mayors empowered to perform civil marriages 02-04-2008 A legal notice published on March 7 now allows mayors in Malta to perform
civil marriages. This novelty is mainly applicable to Maltese couples interested
in civil marriage only, and not to those getting married in church. In Malta,
the Catholic wedding ceremony is recognised by the state as a civil marriage as
well.
Couples who tie the knot in church therefore still do not have to go to the
registrar, or the mayor. The traditional Catholic ceremony remains fully legal.
For couples who do not wish to get married in church, this legal
amendment nonetheless implies a great step forward.
However, the president of the Local Council's Association in Malta, Michael
Cohen, believes that many couples will now want to add a ceremony to their
wedding day and get married both in church and before the mayor. "In Malta
certain couples would do anything to make their wedding day special, to have
more photo opportunities and more celebrations", he states.
