Community broadband projects in the United Kingdom

Introduction
Presents the findings of a study which mapped community broadband initiatives in the UK to capture key facts about them, and to identify some of the barriers to their development.
Description
This document presents the findings of a study which mapped community broadband initiatives in the UK. It looks at the following issues:
  • number of users and types of organisations;
  • funding;
  • technology;
  • services for digital inclusion; and
  • barriers to development.
It also highlights the key lessons from the study.
Background information
Community broadband projects have sprung up all over the UK. The research was started to map broadband initiatives, to capture key facts about them and to identify some barriers to their development.
Methodology
The research involved an online web survey supplemented by web and telephone research.
Conclusions
Concludes that there is a great deal more community-based activity going on than was expected, and a great deal more fixed wireless broadband access emerging than regulators and policy makers assume.
