In the mix: a review of mixed income, mixed tenure and mixed communities - UK

Introduction
Presents a summary of evidence about the promotion of communities with mixed incomes, housing tenures and other important social characteristics.
Description
Outlines what is meant by "mixed communities", and the different types of mixed communities. Looks at the evidence for the benefits of mixed communities. Discusses how mixed communities should be. Considers how to plan and achieve mixed communities, and how to manage them. Identifies gaps in the evidence and directions for further research.
Background information
The report is one of a series commissioned to look at the issue of mixed communities, and was jointly commissioned by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the Housing Corporation and English Partnerships. The aim of the Housing Corporation is to deliver affordable homes in sustainable communities, and its National Affordable Housing Programme 2006-08 aims to build communities with a mix of housing types and tenures to attract a mix of residents. The report brings together all the major research on mixed communities to date, with the aim of informing policy makers.
Methodology
The report based of a review of the literature.
Conclusions
The evidence suggests measured optimism about the benefits of socially mixed communities. Of the mixed neighbourhoods studied, the majority have been successful and desirable. The report cautions against uprooting residents for substantial housing remodelling without first being sure of the benefits. Notes that further longitudinal studies will be required to enhance this area of research.
