Code for Sustainable Homes: a step-change in sustainable home building practice - UK

Introduction
This is a guide that  introduces the Code for Sustainable Homes and is aimed towards all those involved in the home building industry, including designers, builders, product manufacturers and assessors.
Description
The Code for Sustainable Homes is a new national standard for designing and constructing homes to a higher standard of sustainability. The code measures the sustainability of a home against design categories, rating the whole home as a complete package.
The design categories included within the Code are:
  • energy
  • water
  • materials
  • surface water run-off
  • waste
  • pollution
  • health and well-being
  • management
  • ecology
The guide includes tables showing the criteria that assessors will use to measure achievement of sustainability performance under the Code. It summaries the benefits of the Code and sets out the points scoring system for minimum standards on the design categories listed. It also contains practical examples of home design to meet Code levels.
