Building Sustainable Communities: Developing the skills we need

Introduction
A short document which intends to start the process of addressing the skills deficits in delivering sustainable communities by describing the issues and suggesting 5 priorities for action.
Problem
The short document aims to start to address the skills deficits of individuals and organisations in terms of delivering sustainable communities.
Description
Sir John Egan has been asked to review how to get more skilled people liberated to deliver great new communities. Over the last three years CABE has looked at this question in some depth. In this short document, they seek to kick start the process by describing the nature of the problem and by offering five priorities for solving it.
Approach
The document sets out the background to the issues and the need for change, what the skills deficits actually are and a suggested programme of action to address the issues and gaps in skills.
Results
Five recommendations come out of the case study:
  1. Develop a sustained programme of training and personal development.
  2. Create a ‘one-stop’ online learning portal for built environment professionals.
  3. Develop a lasting partnership between ODPM and DfES to drive an understanding of the built environment into the heart of the National Curriculum.
  4. Ensure that every URC and other new Special Purpose Vehicles have the right organisational structure and skills training programme to allow for the delivery of excellence at ground level.
  5. Commission a ‘select committee’ style review of the role of the professional institutions.
