Tackling fear of crime and disorder in the community - UK

Introduction
Sets out guidance from the Home Office on how individuals and groups can get involved in reducing crime and disorder and fear of crime in their community.
Description
Looks at the impact of crime and anti-social behaviour as drivers of fear in the community, and ways in which people can become involved in reducing crime and disorder and thereby reduce fear as a consequence. Discusses crime and disorder statistics and the fear of crime voiced by the general public. Defines crime and disorder and the range of activities that can be used to curb it including target hardening and controlling access to specific areas. Explores the situational and social approaches to implementing change. Introduces the concept of problem oriented policing and partnership working.
Examines the role of Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships (CDRP) and their work such as auditing levels of crime and disorder problems in specific areas, and devising strategies to tackle these priority areas. Considers the fear of crime and its impact on public perception. Gives examples of how crime and anti-social behaviour can be tackled, including using Anti-Social Behaviour Orders and Acceptable Behaviour Contracts.
Examines the Fear of Crime Matrix, designed to help CDRPs identify local fear issues and find the best approach suited to their particular area. Presents three theoretical models relating to the fear of crime. Looks at anti-social behaviour and how it will be dealt with by the policy and local authorities. Discusses the community’s role in anti-social behaviour. Makes suggestions as to how individuals can become more involved in crime reduction.
