Local connections: policing with the community

Introduction
The research focuses on the potential of better addressing demand for policing through enhanced engagement with communities, covering seven basic elements:
  1. community consultation;
  2. community planning and community safety;
  3. policing with the community;
  4. active citizenship;
  5. customer interface;
  6. community cohesion; and
  7. media and marketing.
Description
This report provides an update on key issues emerging from community safety and community planning considerations, including research within the Scottish, UK and International contexts to identify noteworthy practice.
Background information
Following publication of the thematic report on Police Visibility ‘Narrowing the Gap’ in December 2002, HM Inspectorate of Constabulary for Scotland recognised the need for complementary studies in crime management and community policing, to inform approaches to managing the gap between public expectations and service delivery.
Methodology
The research draws on case study evidence to report on police services' engagement with local communities.
Conclusions
The report suggests a stronger bias towards proactive crime prevention and problem solving, within a climate of strong community support and partnership working as a foundation for policing styles.
