The resource is to help non-experts develop an understanding of crime prevention and the sustainable communities’ agenda and how this affects their ability to contribute, especially through the LSP.

‘Warwick Way’ is a Charnwood estate with a high level of deprivation. Residents feel intimidated, drug use is widespread, as well as other criminal and anti-social behaviour. The estate has no school, no retail outlets or other small businesses, no community centre and it lacks a community focal point. The design of the estate, high concentrations of unemployment, lone parents and long term mental health issues, have all exacerbated the problem.

To tackle the problems on the estate, a multi-agency group was set up covering different areas:

The groups worked closely with voluntary agencies, action groups, task and finish groups and all statutory bodies. A mapping exercise was carried out to identify key problem areas, and funding sought to run the project

Over 15 agencies were keen to get involved in the group. Because the strong relationships built up between agencies, it is possible to identify those at risk of becoming involved in anti social behaviour. The early enforcement work on the estate resulted in a 25% reduction in crime and anti social behaviour incidents. The community spirit is high with local events held and adults embracing education opportunities.
