Neighbour Hood – Friction Arts

Introduction
This case study describes an arts project aimed at engaging hard-to reach groups in inner-city Birmingham.
Problem
The project sought to engage hard-to reach groups from within the inner-city community and provide a voice for self-expression.
Description
Friction Arts is a Birmingham-based artist company. In October 2003 they collaborated with a local artist to create Neighbour Hood Watch, a project to investigate what life is like for inner-city residents and communicate the results through the arts. Having achieved success, the project is now entering its second phase involving the creation of an arts space.
Approach
Responses from local residents about inner-city life were collected through a series of informal interviews and re-presented in the form of poems which were then made into posters for display throughout the community.
Results
The project has been well received by the community has now entered its second phase which will see the creation of a new space for creating and showcasing art created with and by local residents. In 2006 the project was commended under RegenWM's Most Effective Small Team or Project Prize.
Beneficiaries
Residents of inner-city Birmingham and the local artist community.
