Refugee Integration and Cohesive Communities: Community Development in Practice

Introduction
This research aims to explore ways for promoting refugee integration and community cohesion by measuring the role that community development has to play in aiding the integration of refugees and challenging racism.
Description
This report presents the findings of a research project exploring how community development values and methods that can assist in the integration of asylum seekers and refugees and in promoting cohesive communities.
Background information
There is an increasing awareness of the rise in refugees arriving in Britain and the apparent breakdown in community relations in some northern towns. Coupled with national and local debates about race equality, a need has been identified for a new approach to promoting integration.
Methodology
The research reached a number of practitioners – most based in community and voluntary sector organisations - working in local communities where asylum seekers and refugees were living. The practitioners shared their experiences through case study pro-formas or interviews.
Conclusions
The findings were summarised in three main themes:
  • Preparation for new arrivals and the involvement of host communities
  • Challenging prejudice and discrimination
  • Awareness raising and provision of information
Preparation will help ease new arrivals into the host community. Local workers and communities have developed some activities to reduce conflict and hostility. Many agencies need to consider reviewing their approach to equality and race equality.
Protocols are needed to ensure sensitive media reporting around asylum, race and cultural issues. Workers need strategies and support to challenge discriminatory practice.
