Sports for Life, Bradford Trident NDC Partnership

Introduction
The case study details the Bradford Trident sports for Life project. The project seeks to promote social inclusion and community cohesion while increasing participation in community activities and developing local social capital.
Problem
Bradford Trident’s Sports for Life project aims to engage young people in sports activities as a way or promoting social inclusion and community cohesion.
Description
The case reports that the Sports for Life project objectives are as follows:
  • consult local sports clubs and teams in order to establish – and set targets for – future priorities;
  • increase the number of local people participating in sports activities;
  • coordinate residents’ access to local facilities such as the nearby university sports grounds;
  • improve support for existing teams and clubs by providing coaching courses and help and advice on funding;
  • empower local residents to deliver sports programmes in their
    area;
  • develop opportunities across the area, including linking with new and existing sports facilities.

Approach
The case study details that the Sports for Life project employs a coordinator to engage people in sport, and runs a small grants fund for local sporting organisations.
An additional part of the coordinator’s remit is to arrange sports related vocational training, mainly accredited courses such as Community Sports Leadership Awards and football coaching courses for local people. These build participants’ confidence as well as more broadly promoting healthy lifestyles.
Results
The case study reports that the project’s mid year review in October 2003 highlighted that since the Sport Fund’s establishment in March 2003, it had run five sports courses and supported 12 groups. These are important milestones in community participation and are consistent with the project’s rationale.
Beneficiaries
The young people who participated in the project - It covers an area on the south western side of the city, the area’s index of multiple deprivation score makes it equivalent to a ward in the most deprived 10 percent of wards in England.
Resources used
Sports for Life receives the bulk of its funding from the NDC, which is contributing a total of £120,400. Sport England is providing a further £79,280.
