It’s our space: a guide for community groups working to improve public space

Introduction
A guide which provides advice to community groups about becoming involved with and improving outdoor spaces, from minor improvements to refurbishing existing spaces and creating new ones.
Description
The guide aims to empower communities to get involved in planning, designing, managing and maintaining public spaces. It defines what is included in the definition of ‘public spaces’. It looks at what constitutes good quality design in public spaces and highlights a number of relevant issues to consider in relation to this.
The four key stages of a project are outlined - prepare; design; construct; use – and guidance is provided on how to conduct each of these stages effectively. Illustrates the guidance with a range of case studies from open space projects based in the UK.
Further information is provided in the form of checklists, a list of contacts, a glossary of terms used and a list of further reading.
