The district suffers some of the highest levels of social deprivation in the UK through geographical isolation and the decline of traditional industries, such as mining. Skills levels are particularly low.

The seminar was organised because schools were not engaging in the wider regeneration agenda and lacked confidence in making grant applications for financial support, particularly the NRF. Such funding could impact positively on educational targets.

The seminar also aimed to encourage schools to become more involved in the LSP and LLP in order to give them a voice in strategic planning for education in the area.

The Better Bidding seminar aimed to encourage schools in the Bolsover district to enter into Neighbourhood Renewal activities by providing information about NRF and other funding opportunities and demonstrate through good practice what could be achieved.

A seminar was held in Bolsover district, East Midlands. Representatives from 20 schools attended, accompanied by key partners such as Bolsover LSP, Derbyshire Connexions, GOEM.

A series of presentations were made from grant making bodies and schools who had successfully utilised regeneration funding to address educational targets.

Networking played a key part in the event. Participants were asked to fill in an assessment form at the end of the event.

100% of forms returned indicated that the goals of the seminar had been met – ‘to inform opportunities available through NRF and the Arts Council England’.
