Generic skills in the Public Realm: A good practice guide for the historic environment

Introduction

The good practice guide details different methods of communication used to communicate with stakeholders.

Problem

The good practice guide recognizes that whilst overall responsibility almost always rest with the local authority, professionals involved have to work together and with stakeholders. They have to communicate, to learn and create processes that protect historic assets.

Description

The guide reports of 3 projects which uses 3 different methods of communicating on the public realm.

Approach

The 3 methods of consultation used are as follows:

In Fakenham consultation with the public was carried out through a number of exhibitions of the plans and models of the town square.
In Bury St Edmunds communication was through the local press. Also regular press releases were issued during construction to inform the community of progress.
The efforts to communicate with the public in Norwich used local media and a press strategy was developed with the help of the City Council’s Communications Department.

The guide details conflicts which arose and how these were tackled.

Results

The guide concluded that: It is important that decisions are made on the basis of good quality information and that projects are evaluated to learn what has worked and what has not. Good evidence is important especially when it comes to making difficult decisions.
