RESTART - Renewable Energy Strategies and Technology Applications for Regenerating Towns

Introduction

RESTART (Renewable Energy Strategies and Technology Applications for Regenerating Towns) is a targeted demonstration project, promoted by the European Commission and coordinated by RESET (Renewable Energy Strategies for European Towns).

Problem

Regeneration of deprived areas through the use of innovative environmental concepts.

Description

The demonstration project involved the different players of such complex urban projects:

city officers,
promoters,
professionals,
local associations,
technology manufactures,
and experts,

Through this cooperation 8 large scale building programmes are realised in the 8 participating cities.

The equivalent of more than 2,500 dwellings and two important research and cultural centres were built or rehabilitated with use of various renewable energy technologies and sustainable design concepts.

Approach

The RESTART process was characterised by:

vertical design and construction activities in the eight cities;
horizontal / common tasks, involving all contractors with their key players.

The RESTART Common Tasks were tailored to provide the participation of various target roles, within the demonstration project:

city administrators,
local target groups and associations,
designers and professionals,
manufacturers, builders, promoters.

Results

The case study details a number of developments that have taken place in each city who are part of the project. The case study also records a number of lessons learned from the project and issues to consider in terms of replication.
