Introduction

The main objective of ‘INDICATORS FOR SOCIAL URBAN SUSTAINABILITY’ is to provide a larger empirical basis for studying the relationship between the formation of cities and urban social behaviour.

Description

The relationship between the formation of urban public space and the quality of human social activities within that space has been investigated over the last forty years. The outcome of these studies is a a set of formal indicators, intended to strengthen local social networks. The scope of the research is a systematic comparison between ‘samples’ of real urban fabrics and cities, selected for their different historical origins and cultural contexts.

The objectives of ‘INDICATORS FOR SOCIAL URBAN SUSTAINABILITY’ are:

To provide a larger empirical basis for measuring the linkage between the formation of cities and social behaviour; and
To provide a set of technical tools for gathering and processing data on the formation of urban public space.
